Talgarth Hospital
A few years ago I had the opportunity to go and explore Talgarth Hospital. Myself, my daughter and two others went up there early one morning. Long arse drive but the beauty of Wales once you cross the bridge is amazing, I’d love to live there one day.
This place was a mess, years of standing empty and open to the elements had taken its toll, there were floors missing, you could see up to the roof in places where there should have been 3 floors. The floor you were walking on could not be trusted and were an obstacle course of fallen masonry, floors, glass and things that had been vandalised.
Talgarth is massive, lots of lovely long corridors to explore, lots of rooms to look at and lots of pigeons poking themselves out of random places and scaring the shit out of you. There are quite a few separate buildings of more wards and also the boiler room and the grand hall. I would have loved to have seen this place freshly abandoned before it became the apocalyptic shell it now was.
I love exploring hospitals especially asylums when you have some idea of how these places were run and how badly people were treated, you can imagine as you walk around how busy it would have been, the sights and the sounds.
Unfortunately half way through our explore the heavens opened so it was raining inside the building due to the knackered roof which made it even more treacherous underfoot. Sadly a lot of the equipment and furnishings were long gone though we did find a large room in the grounds that contained some furniture. We couldn’t find a way into the Chapel but everything else was open to be explored. Spent around four hours in here in all.
Our journey home was an absolute nightmare, I took a wrong turn down a single track road with a sheep and her lamb blocking the road, my passengers had to try herd them off the road which turned into a comical half mile as they didn’t want to go back to their field. Eventually they turned and went back. The rest of the drive was torrential rain and i couldn’t get above 40mph on the motorway due to zero visibility.
